Iranian MPs Meet PM Modi, Jaishankar and Shashi Tharoor During India Visit

Iranian parliamentary delegates visiting India for the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The engagements took place in New Delhi on October 26, 2026, as India hosted parliamentary representatives from BRICS member and partner countries. The meetings highlighted the diplomatic significance of the forum and provided an opportunity for discussions on bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met members of the Iranian delegation during their visit, underscoring the importance of continued engagement between India and Iran. The two countries have longstanding diplomatic, economic and cultural connections, with regional developments and trade remaining important areas of mutual interest. The meeting came amid broader discussions on cooperation among BRICS countries.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the Iranian parliamentary representatives. India and Iran maintain diplomatic relations involving regional connectivity, economic engagement and cooperation on issues affecting West and Central Asia. Such high-level interactions provide opportunities for both sides to exchange views and discuss matters of shared interest.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was also among the Indian political figures who met the visiting Iranian delegation. His participation reflected engagement with the foreign parliamentary representatives beyond the executive branch of the Indian government. Parliamentary exchanges are an important part of diplomatic outreach, allowing lawmakers to discuss international affairs and strengthen institutional relationships.

The meetings took place alongside the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi, which brought together legislators from participating countries to discuss parliamentary cooperation and development priorities. India hosted the gathering as part of its engagement with the BRICS framework, which seeks to strengthen collaboration among its members across political, economic and other areas.

India and Iran have maintained relations through diplomatic dialogue and cooperation on regional connectivity. The development of the Chabahar Port project has been a significant element of their engagement, offering India a potential route to Afghanistan and Central Asia. However, the wider regional situation and international sanctions have also shaped the economic relationship between the two countries.

The Iranian delegation's participation in the parliamentary forum demonstrated Tehran's continued engagement with multilateral platforms involving India and other BRICS countries. Such meetings can help maintain communication between governments and legislatures, particularly when regional security, trade and international cooperation are important subjects of discussion.

The visit added another chapter to India-Iran parliamentary engagement, with meetings involving senior Indian political leaders providing an opportunity to discuss bilateral ties and broader international issues. The longer-term significance of these interactions will depend on subsequent diplomatic exchanges and any concrete agreements or initiatives that emerge from the discussions.
