Jaishankar Says US Has Chosen to Become a ‘Lonelier Power’

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the United States is undergoing a major strategic repositioning as the global power balance continues to change. Speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar described Washington’s current approach as a deliberate choice that could make the US a “lonelier power.”

Jaishankar said the international system is being reshaped by two major developments — the repositioning of the US and the growing influence of China. He noted that the changing relationship between the world’s two largest powers is having consequences well beyond Washington and Beijing.

According to Jaishankar, the US appears to be taking a more independent approach to its global role and international partnerships. He described this as a “posture of choice,” suggesting that Washington is deliberately changing how it engages with other countries.

He also highlighted the growing importance of countries such as India and other emerging and middle powers. As major-power competition intensifies, these countries are seeking to diversify their partnerships, reduce strategic risks and strengthen their own capabilities.

Jaishankar’s remarks come amid a broader transformation in international relations. India is continuing to engage with multiple major powers while pursuing its own national interests, reflecting New Delhi’s approach of maintaining strategic flexibility in a rapidly changing global order.
