Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee Address Media After Meeting President Murmu Over Electoral Concerns

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and other opposition leaders met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 9, 2026. The delegation raised concerns about alleged electoral irregularities and the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Following the meeting, opposition leaders spoke to the media about their concerns and demands.

The delegation included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and representatives of other INDIA bloc parties. The leaders submitted a memorandum seeking intervention over their allegations concerning voter-list revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission of India. They also sought action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said President Murmu had asked the opposition to provide evidence supporting its allegations of “vote chori.” Gandhi indicated that the opposition was prepared to present the material it had collected. The allegations remain claims raised by opposition leaders and should not be treated as established findings of electoral fraud.

Mamata Banerjee also raised concerns about the electoral process and the treatment of opposition parties. The opposition delegation argued that issues surrounding voter-list revisions required attention from constitutional authorities. Its members called for accountability and further action over their concerns about the Election Commission.

The meeting comes amid an ongoing political dispute over the SIR process and demands for electoral reforms. The opposition has called for action against the Chief Election Commissioner and raised questions about the voting system. The meeting and subsequent media statements brought these demands into public focus, although the allegations themselves require assessment against evidence and official responses.
