Tesla Flying Car: 8 Questions and Answers About the New Roadster

1. What Is the News About Tesla’s Flying Car?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a redesigned version of the long-awaited Tesla Roadster at an event in Texas on October 15, 2026. The demonstration attracted attention after the sports car appeared to lift into the air, perform an aerial manoeuvre and land on its wheels. The vehicle incorporates experimental technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company.

2. Can the New Tesla Roadster Really Fly?

The demonstration showed the Roadster briefly leaving the ground and performing an aerial stunt. However, this does not mean it can fly like an aeroplane or operate as a conventional flying car. Its demonstrated capabilities are different from sustained flight, and its practical flying range and operating limitations have not been fully established publicly.

3. What Technology Allows the Car to Lift Off?

The vehicle uses cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX technology. According to reports from the unveiling, the system uses high-pressure compressed air to produce thrust, allowing the car to lift and rotate briefly. The demonstration also featured a suction system that helped the vehicle move along an inverted ramp. These are experimental features rather than ordinary electric-car technologies.

4. How Fast Can Tesla’s New Roadster Accelerate?

Tesla showcased the Roadster with a claimed acceleration time of less than one second from zero to 60 miles per hour, or approximately 97 kilometres per hour, for a thruster-equipped version. This would be an extraordinary performance figure if achieved under real-world conditions. However, the claim should be distinguished from independently verified production-car performance, as final specifications may change.

5. When Will the Tesla Flying Car Be Available?

Tesla has indicated that production of the redesigned Roadster is expected to begin in 2028. The vehicle has faced years of delays since its next-generation version was first announced in 2017. The latest demonstration has renewed interest in the project, but the production timeline does not guarantee that every experimental feature will be available in the final customer model.

6. What Is the Expected Price of the New Tesla Roadster?

Tesla has not provided a final retail price for every version of the redesigned Roadster. Reports following the unveiling said reservations were being offered with deposits of $50,000 for the Performance version and $250,000 for the Thrust version, while the Rocket version was described as invitation-only. These deposits are not the same as a confirmed final purchase price.

7. Is Tesla’s Flying Car Safe and Legal for Public Roads?

The demonstration alone does not establish that the Roadster’s aerial capabilities are safe or legally permitted on public roads. A vehicle using high-pressure thrusters would face substantial safety, engineering and regulatory challenges. Tesla would need to meet applicable vehicle-safety requirements, and any use of its flying-like features would depend on the final design and relevant regulations.

8. Does This Mean Flying Cars Are Finally Becoming a Reality?

The Roadster demonstration represents an unusual development in experimental vehicle technology, but it does not yet establish that practical flying cars are ready for everyday use. The vehicle was shown performing brief aerial manoeuvres rather than sustained passenger flight. Its production progress, real-world performance, safety testing and regulatory approval will determine how much of the demonstration becomes a usable feature. For now, Tesla’s Roadster remains a high-performance sports-car project with experimental flying-like capabilities.
